Sweden Has the Most Museums Per Capita of Any Country on Earth

A region-by-region guide to 1,600 museums — the ones I’ve already visited, and the ones on my list

I did not know, until I looked it up, that Sweden holds an actual world record for this.

Guinness World Records lists Sweden as the country with the most museums per capita. Around 1,600 museums for 10.6 million people. Roughly 151 museums per million inhabitants.

The number comes from a 2021 UNESCO survey of museums worldwide. Guinness leaves out very small countries, under 100,000 people, so one tiny nation with one museum cannot distort the ranking.

I have visited some of the museums below. Most of them, not yet. My plan is simple: visit as many as I can over the next few years, and write a full article about each one after the visit. This page will grow and link out to those articles as they go up.

Is there one pass for all of Sweden’s museums?

No single card opens every door. Here are the passes that exist:

• Statens historiska museer, annual card, 450 kronor. Free entry for a year to seven museums: Historiska museet, Hallwylska museet, Livrustkammaren, Ekonomiska museet, Skoklosters slott, Tumba bruksmuseum, and Sveriges museum om Förintelsen. Buy the Statens historiska museer annual card.
• Världskulturmuseerna, annual card, 350 kronor. Covers all four: Medelhavsmuseet, Etnografiska museet, Östasiatiska museet in Stockholm, and Världskulturmuseet in Gothenburg. Stockholm-only: 200 kronor. Gothenburg-only: 180 kronor. See Världskulturmuseerna pass options.
• Kulturkortet, Helsingborg, 495 kronor a year (325 pensioners, 275 students). Covers Dunkers kulturhus, Fredriksdal museer och trädgårdar, Kärnan, Sofiero slott, and Helsingborgs idrottsmuseum. See Kulturkortet terms.
• Sveriges Museer membership card — not for the public. Sveriges Museer is the industry body for museum institutions, not individuals. As a benefit of that institutional membership, staff at member museums get a personal card for free entry elsewhere.
• A national museum card is being studied, as of 2026, similar to ones in Finland, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Estonia. Proposed price: 700 to 750 kronor a year. Nothing is decided. Read about the proposed national museum card.

Culture nights: free museum entry across Sweden

Most Swedish cities hold an annual “Kulturnatt” or “Kulturnatten” (Culture Night), when most cultural sites, including museums, open free or close to free. Dates are set city by city and usually only announced for the current year.

• Stockholm — Kulturnatt Stockholm. Confirmed for April 24, 2027. Free admission at all participating venues. Kulturnatt Stockholm event info.
• Göteborg — Kulturnatta. October 23, 2026. Most program points are free. Kulturnatta Göteborg program.
• Uppsala — Kulturnatten. September 12, 2026. Kulturnatten Uppsala program.
• Lund — Kulturnatten. September 19, 2026. Free admission to most of around 300 program points. Kulturnatten Lund program.
• Västerås — Kulturnatt. September 19, 2026. Free city buses run that evening. Västerås Kulturnatt program.
• Örebro — Kulturnatten. October 23, 2026. Kulturnatten Örebro program.
• Luleå — Kulturnatten. September 5, 2026. Confirmed free entry. Kulturnatten Luleå at Kulturens hus.

No confirmed citywide culture night found for Malmö, Helsingborg, Norrköping, Linköping, Jönköping, Sundsvall, Umeå, or Kiruna. Worth checking each city’s tourism site closer to autumn.

Museums in Götaland (South and West Sweden)

Göteborg

• Göteborgs konstmuseum — Nordic and international art at a serious scale.
• Röhsska museet — Sweden’s only museum built entirely around design, craft, and fashion.
• Universeum — A science center with an indoor rainforest and a space exhibit.
• Maritiman — The world’s largest floating ship museum.
• Världskulturmuseet — The Museum of World Culture, covering global cultures and contemporary issues.
• Sjöfartsmuseet Akvariet — Maritime history paired with a public aquarium.

• Mjellby Art Museum — Home to the Halmstad Group, a pioneering circle of Swedish surrealist painters.

• Dunkers kulturhus — Culture house with art, design, and city history.

What surprised me most

What stayed with me, researching this, was not the number of museums. It was how many are built to be reached, not just visited. Many Swedish state museums drop or waive their entry fee on set days, so cost is not the reason someone stays out. That comes from a public policy choice: culture should not belong only to people who can afford a ticket.

I trained as a Certified Norm Engineer, working on accessibility, so I notice this kind of thing. A ramp gets you in the door. A genuinely affordable annual pass gets you in the habit.

What is my verdict?

This list is not finished, and neither am I. Julita Gård is done. Stockholm is well underway. The rest of this map is still ahead of me, one museum and one article at a time.

Practical facts

• Getting there: Götaland and Svealand cluster tightly around Malmö, Gothenburg, and Stockholm. Norrland’s museums sit further apart and suit a longer northern trip.
• Best season: Most museums run year-round. Open-air museums (Skansen, Gamla Linköping, Disagården, Kulturen i Lund, Norra Berget) have fuller, staffed programs in summer.
• Budget: The 450-kronor and 350-kronor annual cards pay for themselves after two or three visits. Several state museums also run free-entry days, including citywide Kulturnatt events (see above).
• Accessibility: Larger state museums are generally step-free. Older open-air museums can have uneven ground and steps. Check each museum’s own accessibility page first.
• LGBTQ travelers: Sweden is consistently rated one of the most accepting countries in Europe.
