Fresh Swedish cinnamon buns, kanelbullar, on display – Stockholm food tour

About this Stockholm food tour

Savour authentic local flavours and Swedish food traditions with a local guide. I ask what you want to try — and what to avoid — and build the route around it.

We stop at bakeries, small kitchens, and market stalls along the way. You taste real Swedish home cooking, not tourist versions of it.

Most tours end with fika, a Swedish coffee break with pastries. It is the best way I know to slow down and talk about what you just ate.

What’s included

  • Guided walk with a local expert
  • Tastings at 3-4 local food stops
  • A proper Swedish fika with pastries

Adapt this tour

Tell me about allergies or dietary needs before we start. We can go more traditional, more modern, or more sweet — your choice. See all private tours in Stockholm.

Good to know before your Stockholm food tour

Where we meet

We meet at your hotel, or at a place we agree on in the city. From there, we walk on easy, flat streets. Bring comfortable shoes and an appetite.

How long it takes

Three hours, with tastings at 3 to 4 local food stops and a Swedish fika at the end.

Swedish dishes to try

Tell me which of these you want to taste. I build the route around what you want to try.

Classic meat and fish dishes

  • Köttbullar – Swedish meatballs. The traditional way to serve them is with boiled or riced potatoes, cream sauce, fresh lingonberries stirred with sugar, and pressgurka (quick-pickled cucumber).
  • Janssons frestelse – a creamy potato gratin with Swedish ansjovis (spiced sprats), onion, cream and breadcrumbs. It is always on the Christmas and Easter table.
  • Kåldolmar – cabbage leaves filled with minced meat and rice, browned and then simmered. Often served with potatoes, cream sauce and lingonberries.
  • Strömming – Baltic herring. Breaded and fried, with mashed potatoes and lingonberries, or pickled as inlagd sill on holidays.
  • Gravad lax – salmon cured with salt, sugar, pepper and dill. Usually served with hovmästarsås (a sweet mustard and dill sauce) and boiled potatoes.
  • Laxpudding – a baked dish of salt-cured salmon and potatoes in an egg and milk mix, served with melted butter.
  • Sjömansbiff – “sailor’s beef”, a classic stew of beef, onion and potatoes, slowly cooked in beer.

Traditional home cooking (husmanskost)

  • Raggmunk – grated potato mixed into a batter and fried into crisp pancakes. Served with fried pork and lingonberry jam.
  • Ärtsoppa och pannkakor – a long tradition, often on Thursdays. Yellow pea soup with pork, then thin pancakes with strawberry jam and whipped cream.
  • Kroppkakor and palt – potato dumplings filled with pork. Kroppkakor are common in southern and eastern Sweden, for example on Öland. Palt comes from the north of Sweden.
  • Kalops – a slow-cooked beef stew with onion, allspice and bay leaves, served with boiled potatoes and pickled beetroot.

Allergies and diets

Tell me about allergies, intolerances or a special diet when you send your request. Vegetarian guests are welcome. I choose the food stops to match what you can eat.

Children and access needs

Children are welcome. I adapt the route, the pace and the stories to keep them interested. If you have mobility, sensory or other access needs, tell me before you book. Most tours can be offered with an adapted route.

When to go

The food tour runs all year. Autumn is a good season for a slow food walk. In winter, Stockholm is quieter and darker, and I shape the tour to match.

Price, payment and cancellation

I do not have a fixed price list. The price depends on the number of guests, the hours and the tastings. Within 24 hours, you get a route and a clear price quote. You pay by bank transfer, in cash, or online by Stripe, PayPal or credit card. Cancel more than 48 hours before the tour for a full refund of any online payment.

More time in Stockholm?

A full-day private tour of Stockholm can combine the food tour with another tour, for example the Gamla Stan walking tour in the morning and food in the afternoon.

What a guest said

“My husband and I had Zayera to ourselves and we received an authentic food and history tour of Stockholm, very interesting and enjoyable and tasty. Vegetarian no problem.”
