Gamla Stan, Stockholm's old town, seen across the water from Södermalm on a sunny day – Gamla Stan walking tour

About this Gamla Stan walking tour

There is a reason everyone ends up in Gamla Stan. Cobbled streets, medieval architecture, the Royal Palace, the narrowest alley in the city — it is compact, walkable, and genuinely stunning. The stories are also good, if you have someone to tell them.

I know these streets well enough to take you off the standard route. We pass through the main square, and we also find the quieter corners. You hear about the people who actually lived here, not just the kings.

The walk is two hours. It moves at a comfortable pace with room to stop, look, and ask whatever you want.

What’s included

  • Guided walk with a local expert
  • Where to eat
  • Swedish fika (coffee break with pastries)

Adapt this tour

Tell me what interests you before we start. We can focus more on buildings and royal history, or on daily life long ago. See all private tours in Stockholm.

Good to know before your Gamla Stan walking tour

Where we meet

We meet at your hotel, or at a place we agree on in the city. Gamla Stan is compact. In two hours, we see it on foot, at a comfortable pace.

Three islands, one old town

Gamla Stan covers three islands: Stadsholmen, Helgeandsholmen and Riddarholmen. We walk through the main square and past the Royal Palace, and we also find the quieter corners. At the end, I tell you where to eat.

Languages

I guide this walk in English, German or Swedish. Tell me which language you prefer when you send your request.

Cobblestones and access needs

The streets are cobbled. Wear comfortable shoes. If cobblestones, stairs or long walks are difficult for you, tell me before you book. I adapt the route.

When to go

The walk runs all year. In spring, there are fewer crowds at the main sights. In winter, the old town is quieter, darker and more intimate. For the events in each season, read what to see in Gamla Stan in every season.

Children

Children are welcome. I adapt the route, the pace and the stories to keep them interested.

Price, payment and cancellation

I do not have a fixed price list. The price depends on the number of guests and the hours. Within 24 hours, you get a route and a clear price quote. You pay by bank transfer, in cash, or online by Stripe, PayPal or credit card. Cancel more than 48 hours before the tour for a full refund of any online payment.

More time in Stockholm?

A full-day private tour of Stockholm can combine two tours. Old Town in the morning and the archipelago in the afternoon is one example.
