Stockholm Cruise Ports Explained: Frihamnen & Stadsgården

Where your ship docks decides your whole day. Here’s what you actually need to know.

Your ship can dock in one of a few places around Stockholm, and it makes a real difference to your day ashore. Frihamnen sits about 3.5 kilometres northeast of the centre and takes the larger ships. Stadsgården runs along the Södermalm waterfront, close enough that Gamla Stan’s rooftops are visible from the deck. A few smaller vessels use Skeppsbron, right in the old town itself, and on the busiest days or for the very largest ships, you may instead land 60 kilometres south at Nynäshamn, with a train or coach transfer into the city. Frihamnen: berths F634, F638 and F655

Frihamnen is Stockholm’s main large-ship terminal, and in peak summer it can have several vessels docked at once. All three berths sit roughly 3.5 kilometres from the city centre, along the northeastern waterfront between the city and the Lidingö bridge. The easiest way in is bus 76. It runs about every 20 minutes and reaches Gamla Stan in about 15–20 minutes, for 43 SEK. Check the day’s departures in the SL app, because the timetable changes by season and day of the week. Stadsgården: berths 160 and 167

Stadsgården is the more central and atmospheric option — you dock along the Södermalm waterfront with Gamla Stan’s rooftops directly across the water. Berth 160 is genuinely walkable; berth 167 sits further east and needs a bus, ferry, or taxi.

From berth 160, Slussen is a short walk and puts you on the green metro line to T-Centralen in three minutes, or on the Djurgårdslinjen ferry — SL route 82, running Slussen–Skeppsholmen–Djurgården on the standard 43 SEK ticket — for a 10 to 15 minute crossing to Djurgården. From berth 167, add 15 to 20 minutes to any walking estimate in this guide, and lean on the shuttle or a pre-booked car instead.

Nynäshamn: when your ship docks further out

On the busiest weeks of the season, or when a ship is too large for Frihamnen’s berths, it may dock 60 kilometres south of the city at Nynäshamn instead. It’s run by the same Ports of Stockholm authority as Frihamnen and Stadsgården, chosen for these ships because the approach is deeper and less exposed to wind. Passengers land on a floating Seawalk pier, 260 metres long, that can bring 3,000 people ashore in half an hour.

Because this transfer runs both ways, build in a bigger buffer than you would from Frihamnen or Stadsgården — aim to be back on the platform at least three hours before your ship’s boarding time.

Getting into the city: your options

Bus 76, the Djurgårdslinjen ferry, the metro and tram 7 all take the same 43 SEK ticket. You tap your contactless card or phone as you board, and you can change for free within 75 minutes. Here is how they compare:

Frequencies are typical for the May–September cruise season. Always check the SL app for the day’s live departures, since schedules thin out on Sundays and outside the season.

If your day includes several paid attractions, price out the Go City Stockholm Pass (the Stockholm Pass). Go City lists more than 60 attractions, with passes for 1 to 5 days. Walking times assume a steady adult pace on flat ground. Allow extra time for road crossings and the general unhurriedness of a port day.

Tickets and paying on board

Buy ahead in the SL app, or tap a contactless bank card or phone on board — Stockholm’s buses take no cash and have no ticket machines. Reduced fares (about 40% off, 26 SEK for a single ticket) apply to seniors over 65, young people under 20 and full-time students with an SL-approved student card; with a bank card, you must register it on sl.se the day before. Travelling without a valid ticket costs a 1,850 SEK penalty fee, and inspections do happen. These tickets cover buses, metro, trams, commuter trains and SL’s commuter boats such as the Djurgårdslinjen ferry. They are also valid on Waxholmsbolaget’s archipelago boats between Strömkajen and Vaxholm, but not on private sightseeing boats. Before you step off the gangway

• Know your berth number. The Frihamnen berths are spread across several hundred metres of pier, and your exact berth decides how far you walk to the bus stop. Check your ship’s itinerary or ask the port agent on board.
• Gamla Stan’s streets are medieval. Uneven, occasionally steep, and slippery when wet — wear flat shoes with grip, not heels or wheeled luggage.
• Plan your return backwards. From Gamla Stan to Frihamnen on bus 76, allow 25–30 minutes including the walk to the stop and the wait. From Djurgården, allow 30–35 minutes. Add a 15-minute buffer — Stockholm traffic backs up in summer, and the bus does not come every five minutes.
• English is spoken everywhere. Tipping is optional — 5–10% if you choose to. Restaurants rarely add a service charge automatically.

What is my verdict?

Stadsgården gives you Gamla Stan on foot before you’ve finished your coffee. Frihamnen asks fifteen to twenty minutes of you on a bus, and hands back a normal, unhurried day in return. Neither is a bad draw. What matters more is knowing your berth number before you’re standing on deck wondering which way to walk — and building your return trip backwards from your ship’s boarding time, with a buffer, because Stockholm in July is busier than the timetable admits.
